My Journey to the Altar: changing my last name

I AM MARRIED! Holy cramoly! One thing I found that really sucked is that the marriage felt so incomplete until our Marriage License came in and I could start legally changing my name! As it turns out, the process is mildly annoying but can be made easier with some prep! About a month before the wedding I did a bit of research and had a list with some necessary things to change, and how to go about changing them which made the process bearable.

Drivers License

What you need: Your marriage certificate,

Where to go:  Service BC

Cost: $17 or if you are within 6 months of your expiry date, it will be a $75 renewal fee - plus a relatively long line.

Care Card

I did this at the same time as I did my Drivers License at Service BC. But you can also call 1-604-683-7151.

Service BC gave me a Group Change Request Form to give to my employer since they pay for my MSP. If your MSP is not managed by your employer you will need to do some extra work!

  • Contact health Insurance BC (HIBC) at 1 800 663-7100 (24/7)

Change at a Service Canada office. Although I have also been told by a number of my married friends that they never changed it and it has not affected anything.

What you need: Insurance papers, drivers license

Where to go: Porter and McMillan or anywhere that does ICBC insurance

Bank Acocunts

I have a Tangerine account

You need to call (1-888-826-4374) and request a name change, and then send in a copy of your marriage certificate with your account number via fax or mail.

Fax: 1-888-464-2929

Mail: 3389 Steeles Ave E, Toronto Ont, M2H 0A1

Once your information is received, it will be changed in the system within 1-2 business days.

Canada Revenue Agency

Phone: 1-800-959-8281

Call in and change your name and marital status. You can do your marital status online. This is free and should be done as soon as possible. The hold time on the phone can be lengthy though!

What you need: To fill out a new form. Because you are changing your name, you have to fill out a new application instead of a renewal.

I have chosen to leave my passport for now, as I have two years until it expires and they are expensive! You can still travel with your passport as long as you also take your Marriage Certificate with you.

Cost: 5 year = $120, 10 year = $160

Phone (Bell)

Online tells you that the account owner or the authorized user must email your request and your mobility number to The email must include a scanned copy of your Marriage Certificate.

However; I was able to sign in to our account and change my name in our profile.

What you need: Government Photo ID with your new name

Take your new drivers license with your photo to the Costco customer service counter and they will change your name for you.
